Marks & Spencer (M&S) has made a notable stride in enhancing accessibility to its Beauty Takeback Scheme, now available in 100 stores throughout the UK, including new locations such as Birmingham Bullring, Cardiff, and Inverness. This expansion adds 60 stores to the scheme’s existing footprint, allowing more customers to engage in sustainable practices.
Introduced in June 2023 as a part of M&S’s Plan A roadmap towards Net Zero, the Beauty Takeback Scheme provides a convenient solution for recycling beauty packaging. Customers can bring in any plastic or aluminium beauty packaging, including bottles, tubes, caps, pumps, and tubs, from any retailer, depositing them into designated boxes within the participating stores’ beauty sections.
The initiative has seen significant success, having processed over 1.6 tonnes of beauty packaging which might have otherwise ended up in landfills. Katharine Beacham, M&S’s head of sustainability for clothing and home, emphasised the company’s commitment to fostering a circular economy. She stated, “At M&S, we want to play our part in driving a more circular economy and the circularity services we offer are key to this.”
The expansion of the Beauty Takeback Scheme represents M&S’s ongoing efforts to provide sustainable options to its customer base. Beacham expressed enthusiasm about the programme’s growth, noting its popularity among customers and the opportunity it presents for recycling beauty products: “We’re delighted to be able to introduce the scheme to even more of our stores across the UK this month, to enable them to give their empty beauty packaging another life.”
The extension of the Beauty Takeback Scheme underscores M&S’s commitment to sustainability and customer engagement.
