Morgan Sindall Construction has been awarded a £32m contract by Walsall Council, marking a significant step towards improving waste management services in the area. This ambitious project promises to reduce the dependency on landfill sites and increase recycling rates, reflecting the council’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Located on a six-hectare site that formerly housed McKechnie Brass Ltd, the new household waste recycling centre and transfer station are designed to provide a substantial waste throughput capacity. With the centre handling 40,000 tonnes annually across 19 bays, and the transfer station managing up to 125,000 tonnes of municipal waste and recyclate each year, the facility is poised to accommodate future growth in waste arisings.
From the onset, Morgan Sindall is set to implement sustainable construction methodologies, including lime and cement soil stabilisation techniques and surface water management. By engaging in these practices, an impressive saving of over 350 tonnes of carbon is anticipated, underlining the project’s environmental considerations.
The facility will incorporate key infrastructural elements such as weighbridges, service yards, ventilation systems, and both office and welfare facilities for staff. Additionally, a reuse shop with an integrated workshop area will be featured, enhancing the centre’s functionality and community benefit.
Procured through Pagabo’s major works framework, the project is scheduled for completion within 64 weeks, with Morgan Sindall taking full responsibility for the technical design and construction. Richard Fielding, the area director for Morgan Sindall Construction in the Midlands, testified to the project’s importance, emphasising the critical role of waste management infrastructure in supporting local community needs.
Morgan Sindall’s partnership with Walsall Council ushers in a new era of sustainable waste management.
