Merlin Travel Group is on the brink of transforming the travel sector with its proposed flight consolidator arm, following its successful cruise and holiday ventures.
The group, ever-expanding, is set to strengthen its position as a key player within the travel industry.
Merlin Travel Group’s Strategic Expansion
Merlin Travel Group is making strategic moves to enter the flight consolidator market, following the recent launch of its cruise and tour operator divisions. This expansion fits seamlessly with their growth plans, aiming to broaden their membership and service offerings. The company has seen substantial growth since its inception in 2019, with a significant increase in its membership base.
The group’s growth has been remarkable, having started with just eight agents and growing to 62 members by the end of 2023. Their current strategy aims to reach 80 members by December, primarily by targeting self-employed homeworking agents. This initiative seeks to capitalize on existing market opportunities and the company’s robust network.
Launch of the Flight Consolidator Arm
Under the leadership of managing director Garry Butcher, the Merlin Travel Group is slated to launch its own flight consolidator within the next year. This new venture will provide its agents with the ability to craft unique travel packages using flight-only products under the group’s Atol.
“In the next year we want to consolidate what we’ve got and develop it further,” stated Butcher. Plans include the initial rollout to existing members and agents within Protected Trust Services, followed by a wider market introduction. This move is intended to fill a niche in the market by offering more personalised travel solutions.
Innovative Agency Model
Merlin Travel Group has positioned itself as a unique player in the market through its innovative agency model. Rather than focusing solely on recruitment, the group prioritises finding agents who align with its philosophy and business model.
Their model offers members the flexibility to create bespoke travel packages that others in the industry might not permit. This approach has proven beneficial, as seen in the group’s low attrition rate, having lost only four members in five years.
Growth in the Cruise and Holiday Sectors
Merlin’s new cruise division, MTG Cruise, is designed for agents aspiring to own specialist cruise businesses. This division provides members with the opportunity to create fly-cruise packages, benefiting from Merlin’s existing cruise line relationships and Clia membership.
Since its launch, MTG Cruise has attracted seven members, offering a viable alternative to traditional cruise franchises. The MTG Holidays division has similarly expanded, covering diverse destinations and experiences.
MTG Holidays has been integrated with Protected Trust Services but will soon be available through other third-party agents. This expansion promises to offer more versatile and comprehensive travel experiences for its clients.
Infrastructure and Management
As it expands, Merlin Travel Group is mindful of maintaining a robust infrastructure to support increased demand. Managing director Butcher emphasised the importance of being able to manage call volumes effectively, particularly in the tour operations division.
The company has strategically appointed two new business development managers, Ian Richardson and Janice Abbott-Black, to oversee and support its expanding operations. These appointments are a testament to Merlin’s commitment to sustainable growth.
The Underlying Growth Philosophy
Merlin Travel Group’s growth is attributed to its flexible sales model, which allows agents more autonomy in crafting tailor-made packages. This flexibility distinguishes the company from larger consortia that impose restrictions on dynamic packaging.
The group’s philosophy is not about rapid expansion but careful curating of agents who fit its ethos. Butcher noted that their expansion wasn’t originally planned in terms of scale, but rather evolved from opportunities presented by the market, particularly during the Covid pandemic.
Merlin’s growth strategy also involves leveraging opportunities for agents to develop their own brands, thus offering more bespoke travel solutions. This focus on individual agent freedom fosters innovation and creativity within the group.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, Merlin Travel Group is poised to continue its strategic growth. The introduction of a flight consolidator arm is expected to be a significant milestone, further enhancing their position in the travel industry.
Merlin Travel Group’s thoughtfully planned expansion with its flight consolidator arm marks a pivotal step in broadening their service scope and fulfilling market demands.
This initiative is a testament to the group’s strategic foresight and commitment to innovation in the travel industry.
