- The study underscores the potential of AI in addressing future operational challenges for agencies.
In a comprehensive survey conducted globally among 512 agency leaders, the findings underscore persistent operational challenges that are reshaping the landscape of the agency sector. The Teamwork.com State of Agency Operations Report reveals both external and internal pressures that are complicating growth and operational efficiency. Agency leaders are grappling with spiralling client demands, burnout, and technological inefficiencies. Notably, a significant portion of respondents (56%) express a desire for easier solutions to alleviate these stresses.
The report highlights that client expectations are escalating, with 44% of respondents identifying it as the highest pressure point. This sentiment is magnified by the fact that over a quarter (27%) of agency leaders feel powerless in the face of these challenges. The issue of burnout is pressing, with 26% of agencies reporting a loss of more than 10% of their staff in the first half of 2023. A considerable number of agency leaders (57%) believe that improving assessments of employee bandwidth could mitigate burnout, but 28% of them feel burnt out themselves.
Time and resource management remain persistent hurdles for agencies, continuing a trend seen in previous years. The report indicates that a third of agencies are failing to deliver client projects on time and within budget, operating only during standard working hours. Additionally, only 18% of agencies achieve their defined targets for billable versus non-billable hours. The profitability outlook is equally concerning; 38% of leaders admit to overservicing clients, and 42% lack confidence in increasing profitability in the coming year.
Technological needs are pivotal, as indicated by the survey. Over a third (37%) of agency leaders express a desire to reduce the number of tools used, while only 40% believe their software vendors truly understand their needs. Moreover, merely 27% would recommend their current software. The potential of AI as a transformative tool is recognised, with half of the agencies viewing it as the future of their operational models. Despite these insights, there remains considerable work to be done to align current technologies with agency objectives.
The remarks from Peter Coppinger, Co-Founder and CEO of Teamwork.com, encapsulate the prevailing sentiment: “Running an agency has never been easy and this year hasn’t been any easier, from a potential recession, ongoing inflation, and increased competition from clients and talent.” His comments highlight the pressing requirement for agencies to re-evaluate their operational frameworks to remain competitive and efficient.
The Teamwork.com survey emphasises the urgent need for agencies to innovate and adapt to the evolving operational demands.
