Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Les Smith Haulage, one of the largest independent hauliers in Swindon, has embarked on a significant investment to enhance its capabilities. Established by its namesake founder, the company remains a cornerstone of the local logistics industry. Today, it is managed by his sons, Tony, Danny, and Nick, who orchestrate operations across Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire, covering urban areas such as Swindon and Hungerford.
The company’s decision to invest £4 million in its fleet and facilities is a strategic move to accommodate increased service demand and operational efficiency. Specifically, this financial injection has facilitated the acquisition of 10 new vehicles. These include four newly branded rigid trucks and six state-of-the-art Mercedes units, aimed at replacing older models within their operational roster.
The expansion to 52 vehicles allows the company to better handle rising business volumes and deliver across expanded postcode areas. This move is pivotal in maintaining their competitive edge and meeting the logistical demands of their customers effectively.
Director Nick Smith aptly summarised the momentous occasion, stating, “This is a monumental year for us and, despite what continues to be challenging times within the logistics industry, we grow and expand as a business. ” His comments reflect a forward-thinking approach within a sector known for its economic volatility.
Further underlining their longstanding relationship with Palletways, Les Smith Haulage plays a crucial role in the network’s distribution efforts by collecting and delivering approximately 1,400 pallets weekly. Rob Gittins, the Managing Director of Palletways UK, commended Les Smith Haulage for their contributions over the years, highlighting their strategic importance within the network. This partnership has further benefited both parties, as demonstrated by Les Smith recently taking on additional postcode responsibilities.
Marking half a century of operation, Les Smith Haulage’s investment reflects its commitment to growth and adaptability in a demanding industry.
