Lenham Storage has made a significant advancement in sustainable logistics with the incorporation of two Volvo FM Electric 4×2 tractor units into its existing fleet. These vehicles, known for their zero-tailpipe emissions, are employed in multi-drop delivery operations predominantly within the M25 region. Each day, they return to the company’s Maidstone depot for overnight charging using a 43kW AC charger, ensuring they are ready for next-day operations.
Feedback from drivers has been largely positive, with Andrew Fulcher, the transport operations director, highlighting the ease of adjustment to the new electric models. He recounted one driver’s observation upon reverting to diesel trucks after several days of driving electric: a stark contrast in both vehicle noise and vibration levels. This experience reflects the smooth and quiet operation of electric models, reinforcing their appeal among operators.
The Volvo FM Electric models are powered by three electric motors collectively delivering 666 hp and a continuous torque of 2,400 Nm. Each truck is outfitted with the maximum of six batteries, enabling a driving range of approximately 300 km. Fulcher expressed satisfaction with the performance of these vehicles, stating they have consistently met range expectations and returned to base with substantial battery reserves.
