ISG has been awarded the role of main contractor to helm the conversion of Coventry’s erstwhile Ikea store into a vibrant cultural and art hub. Set to become the Coventry City Centre Cultural Gateway, this ambitious project is rooted in the architectural shell of the former homeware giant, aiming to repurpose the substantial space for art collections and research facilities.
The project, initiated through the Crown Commercial Services (CCS) construction works framework, marks a significant move towards redefining retail spaces in urban centres. Initial mobilisation activities are underway, with full construction commencement slated for August, targeting completion by autumn 2025. The £150 million investment reflects the project’s magnitude and its anticipated impact.
Key architectural interventions will include enhancing the building’s facade with new cladding and finishes, as well as maximising natural light by installing expansive windows on the upper floors. Internally, the space undergoes a comprehensive reconfiguration, which involves substantial structural modifications, as well as upgrades to mechanical and electrical systems. The 60,000 square metre space will be stripped of existing features, including lifts and elevated travellators.
A pivotal element of the redevelopment is the creation of a state-of-the-art, climate-controlled art storage facility. This facility will repurpose the existing high-ceiling warehouse area, featuring a custom oversized lift designed for large art installations, thereby fostering a robust arts infrastructure capable of handling significant works of art.
The project enjoys the backing of key stakeholders such as Coventry City Council, Arts Council England, Arts Council Collection, British Council, Coventry University, and CV Life. Louise Daville of ISG articulates the vision as a transformative endeavour that reimagines former retail spaces into a cultural nucleus for the city, combining diverse partnerships to enrich visitor, student, and academic experiences.
According to Louise Daville, “This is a bold and innovative vision to reimagine former retail space as a cultural hub for the city of Coventry.” This testimony underscores the project’s strategic significance, utilising the CCS framework to ensure collaboration and innovation that promises a distinguished cultural venue for Coventry.
The transformation of Coventry’s former Ikea into a cultural centre exemplifies forward-thinking urban redevelopment with significant cultural ramifications.
