The Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) has shared optimistic research outcomes that highlight a commendable recovery in the travel sector, with most members experiencing an upturn in bookings in 2023 relative to previous years. This data underpins the resilience of travel agents amidst global, economic, and logistical challenges.
A striking 75% of survey respondents noted a rise in their 2023 bookings by over 10% when juxtaposed with figures from 2022. This signals a significant boost in the travel industry’s fortunes as it navigates the post-pandemic landscape. A further 21% recorded an increase of less than 10%, while 4% maintained stable booking levels. Crucially, no agents reported a decline in bookings.
The ITAA chief executive, Clare Dunne, expressed her satisfaction with the results, stating, ‘We are delighted to see our members succeeding and we are very happy to see that travel is well and truly back.’ Her remarks reflect the positive sentiment within the travel community as it witnesses a resurgence.
When comparing the data of 2023 with the pre-pandemic year of 2019, 46% of agents experienced bookings climbing by more than 10%. Yet, some disparities remain with 11% of agents seeing a decrease of more than 10%. This mixed outcome suggests ongoing volatility within the travel market.
Regarding financial performance, the survey revealed that a remarkable 78% of agents reported a turnover growth exceeding 10% in 2023 over the previous year. Comparisons made with 2019 showed a 54% growth in turnover for more than half of the respondents, indicative of a partial market resurgence.
Customer loyalty has evidently been pivotal, as 44% of respondents attributed 40-60% of their business to repeat patrons, with 37% seeing repeat business contributing 60-80% to their overall operation. This trend underscores the importance of customer satisfaction and relationship management in the industry.
In terms of travel preferences, the allure of international destinations remains strong. The survey identified Spain, Portugal, and the USA as the leading choices for Irish holidaymakers in 2023. These destinations continue to captivate travellers, likely due to their diverse offerings and cultural appeal.
Corporate travel bookings also showed promising signs, with 50% of agents noting an increase of more than 10% in 2023 compared to 2022. Corporate travel remains a vital segment, contributing positively to overall growth. However, when evaluated against 2019, any improvement was more modest, with only 29% reporting growth.
The ITAA, comprising over 100 travel agent members and 70 collaborating partners, stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts required to sustain and grow the travel industry. Their collective experience and resources play a crucial role in steering the recovery and future expansion of the sector.
The growth in travel bookings and turnover in 2023 highlights a resilient recovery for Irish travel agents amidst global challenges.
