A significant maritime incident emerged from a severe storm in the Bay of Biscay, involving the Spirit of Discovery, a vessel operated by Saga Cruises. The ship was navigating from Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands to Portsmouth when it encountered force 11 winds, leading to a critical loss of propulsion.
At approximately 12:30 PM on November 4, the vessel began experiencing severe propulsion issues amidst heavy weather conditions. This mechanical failure resulted in the ship moving violently as the crew endeavoured to restart propulsion. The adverse conditions persisted until the following morning, creating a precarious situation for all on board.
The incident resulted in injuries to over 100 passengers, with eight receiving immediate hospital care upon reaching Portsmouth. Tragically, one of these passengers later died due to the injuries sustained. The casualties underscore the risks present during severe maritime conditions and the importance of preparedness.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has scrutinised the event comprehensively, examining all facets including the planned navigational course, the ship’s readiness for inclement weather, and the response to passenger injuries. In addition, the MAIB is evaluating the medical treatment administered to those injured during the ordeal.
The investigation’s draft report is in the final stages of preparation. This document will soon be shared with stakeholders for a 30-day review period, ensuring all aspects of the incident are thoroughly assessed before conclusions are drawn.
The MAIB’s investigation aims to provide clarity on the causes and responses to this tragic maritime event.
