- UK government pledges £1 million for Vietnam’s humanitarian efforts.
Intrepid Travel has initiated an emergency appeal through its not-for-profit arm to assist communities in Northern Vietnam that have been severely impacted by Typhoon Yagi. This initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to humanitarian support.
Typhoon Yagi struck Vietnam with fierce winds reaching 142 mph and torrential rain, marking it as the most significant storm in the region in over three decades. The devastating effects have resulted in the loss of over 350 lives, leaving many others missing, and causing injuries to more than 800 individuals. The destruction spans across extensive areas, with particular damage to infrastructure such as power systems, bridges, and educational facilities.
The Intrepid Foundation, in partnership with the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, a well-established NGO in Vietnam, is spearheading this relief effort. All funds raised through the appeal will directly aid those affected, delivering essential supplies to thousands of families now lacking basic necessities such as shelter, food, and electricity.
Biheng Zhang, general manager of The Intrepid Foundation, emphasised the role of the travel community in these efforts, stating the appeal allows direct contribution to relief efforts across the northern provinces, thus providing immediate support to those in need.
Vietnam stands as a favourite destination for Intrepid travellers, reinforcing the foundation’s long-running collaboration with local charities. Intrepid confirms that its travellers and staff in Vietnam remain safe, with current tours being rerouted to avoid affected areas, ensuring safety and continued local economic support through tourism.
To bolster these efforts, the UK government has announced a £1 million aid package, which will be channelled towards humanitarian partners to facilitate emergency supplies, including health, water, and sanitation services. This financial aid underscores the urgent need for international support in the wake of such significant natural disasters.
The collaborative efforts of international aid and local foundations will be crucial in the recovery of the communities impacted by Typhoon Yagi.
