In an ambitious collaboration, Flipbook Studio and Chester Zoo have teamed up to deliver an unparalleled Halloween attraction. The exhibit, named BEASTS, offers a visually captivating eight-minute journey, leveraging advanced 360-degree visual displays and immersive floor projections. This inventive exhibit aims to transport visitors into a fantastical world populated by mythical creatures.
The narrative driving BEASTS is the work of the renowned zoologist and children’s author Dr. Jess French. Her script presents a remarkable exploration of mythical ecosystems, introducing creatures uniquely adapted to their imagined habitats. This narrative serves as a prelude to the fantasy novel, ‘Beastlands: Race to Frostfall Mountain’. Such innovation marks the UK’s first venture of this nature, setting new standards in the realm of experiential entertainment.
Beyond its entertainment value, the BEASTS exhibit is deeply entwined with Chester Zoo’s mission of fostering a profound connection to nature. Through its compelling storytelling, the exhibit highlights the importance of conservation. Flipbook Studio, specialists in creating location-based digital experiences, have ensured that the animated adventure aligns closely with these conservation ideals.
Andrew Lord, co-founder and director of Flipbook Studio, emphasised the studio’s commitment to delivering immersive experiences that resonate with audiences of all ages.
This project showcases their ambition to blend storytelling, animation, and technology seamlessly.
Helen Dean, Chester Zoo’s head of marketing and brand, highlighted the dual purpose of the BEASTS exhibit. In addition to entertainment, the exhibit serves as an educational platform, spotlighting often misunderstood yet ecologically significant species such as snakes, frogs, bugs, slugs, and moths. Each visitor to the BEASTS attraction contributes to the zoo’s conservation efforts, aiding in the protection of endangered species worldwide.
Running alongside the BEASTS exhibit, the Super-Natural Halloween event at Chester Zoo features additional attractions. These include interactive, Halloween-themed trails, enormous pumpkin sculptures, and family-friendly activities, all available to the public until 3rd November 2024.
The BEASTS experience at Chester Zoo exemplifies how entertainment and education can coexist to promote wildlife conservation.
