The South Wilts Ski Club, a pioneering indoor skiing facility, has recently opened its doors to the public at Bapton Manor Farm, conveniently located between Warminster and Salisbury. This establishment has been initiated by Nick Jenkins, known for founding Moonpig and participating in Dragons’ Den. Jenkins was motivated to provide an opportunity for his daughter to practice skiing between seasonal holidays. Having experienced the Skieasy infinity slope in London, he sought to introduce a similar concept to Wiltshire.
Securing planning permission and completing the setup took a full year, with significant financial input amounting to £300,000. The club is housed in a remodeled tractor barn, featuring a rare MaxxTracks indoor slope. This advanced slope, one of only four available in the UK, allows for adjustment in both gradient and speed, ranging from 13 to 22 degrees and up to 30 km/h, respectively. Jenkins describes the surface as akin to a “very well-groomed piste,” distinguishing it from traditional dry ski slopes.
Jenkins highlights the slope’s capability to challenge skiers, equating one full-speed hour on it to descending from Mount Everest’s summit to sea level. However, safety and quality of practice are prioritised, with only two individuals allowed on the slope concurrently. Nevertheless, bookings can accommodate groups of up to eight individuals.
Beyond the technical facilities, the club provides a welcoming chalet-style clubhouse where visitors can enjoy complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits. Each session is tailored exclusively, with personal coaching from in-house instructor Craig Philpott. A key feature is the filming of ski sessions, enabling skiers to refine their technique through analysis. Essential gear, including boots, helmets, and skis, are provided at no additional cost.
Although currently focused on skiing, the potential for snowboarding is not dismissed, with expansions being considered once the club is confident in its offerings. Sessions are available from midday to evening on weekdays and throughout the day on weekends, with pricing structured to accommodate both peak and off-peak times.
The South Wilts Ski Club offers an innovative and accessible skiing experience for enthusiasts of all levels in Wiltshire.
