Recent data from an annual survey has revealed a notable trend among British cruise passengers: a growing inclination towards itineraries that begin and end in the UK. More than half of the respondents, precisely 53%, expressed certainty or a high likelihood of opting for such cruises this year. This move towards domestic departures corresponds with a rise in demand for holidays that offer ease and convenience without the need for air travel.
Interestingly, a further 24% of those surveyed indicated they were ‘fairly likely’ to choose an ex-UK departure, reinforcing a 5% increase in preference compared to 2023. This suggests that while international travel continues to rebound, there is a pronounced interest in exploring options closer to home, reflecting broader trends in the travel sector where local tourism is seeing renewed interest and growth.
Nevertheless, the traditional allure of fly-cruise packages remains strong with 64% of surveyed individuals stating they were certain or likely to embark on overseas cruises, mirroring figures from the previous year. This stability in demand points to a diversified interest in cruising experiences among UK holidaymakers, balancing both domestic and international preferences.
The survey results are part of a broader analysis predicting continued growth in the cruise industry over the subsequent years. Tony Andrews, managing director of a leading cruise agency, expressed optimism about these findings, recognising the vast potential for sea-based holidays to deliver unparalleled experiences at competitive prices. He highlighted the upcoming launches of numerous ships over the next year, expected to further expand the range of destinations and experiences available to travellers.
The survey findings were celebrated amidst an industry recognition event where several cruise lines received accolades for excellence. Major players within the cruise sector, such as Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises, were jointly honoured as the Best Mainstream Line, while Azamara and Seabourn were acknowledged in the luxury segments. P&O Cruises was notably distinguished by the firm’s consultants for their exemplary services and support, illustrating the close-knit collaborations within the industry to enhance travel offerings.
These insights underscore the evolving preferences of UK cruise passengers, marking a shift towards a blend of domestic convenience and international exploration.
