A significant 67% of British LGBTQ+ travellers have reportedly faced discrimination while abroad in the past year, a sobering increase from 55% in 2023. This underscores the escalating challenges confronting this community, as revealed in a comprehensive study by Booking.com. Travellers who advocate for LGBTQ+ rights face these difficulties even more keenly, with an increased rate of 68%.
Discrimination impacts travel decisions notably. Around 48% of respondents cancelled trips upon discovering destinations unsupportive of LGBTQ+ rights, while 63% opted for locations known for embracing LGBTQ+ identities. The ability to be one’s authentic self is paramount for 70% of LGBTQ+ travellers, significantly above the global average of 63%.
LGBTQ+ individuals often modify their behaviour or appearance when travelling. Nearly half (45%) alter aspects to avoid discrimination, and many create an ‘alter-ego’ for safety. Protection is the primary motive for 43%, while adapting to cultural sensitivities is a reason for 31%. Creating an ‘alter-ego’ helps manage potential challenges.
Despite challenges, the travel industry shows improvements in inclusivity. A significant 78% of LGBTQ+ travellers notice increased comfort in their journeys due to inclusivity efforts. Notably, 85% feel relaxed when checking in at accommodations, and 84% appreciate interactions with staff like flight attendants, indicative of positive change.
Legislative support in travel destinations aids in fostering inclusivity. It also enhances the satisfaction of LGBTQ+ travellers, who value places with adequate legal protections. Engaging with inclusive destinations provides an improved travel experience, and increased inclusivity directly correlates with traveller comfort.
LGBTQ+ travellers are increasingly steering towards destinations prioritising sustainability, opting for socially and economically responsible options. With destinations like Copenhagen, Dublin, and Malta being preferred, this community is leading in supporting sustainable tourism initiatives, highlighting their commitment to social and environmental causes.
LGBTQ+ travellers are advocating for more travel filters to identify welcoming properties. Around 31% desire these features to enhance their travel experiences. This demand is indicative of the ongoing efforts within the community to champion inclusivity and safety, ensuring better and more welcoming travel options globally.
As discrimination persists, the travel industry must continue its efforts to foster inclusivity and create safer environments for LGBTQ+ travellers. Embracing diversity and addressing these challenges will not only enhance experiences but also promote equality in global tourism.
