Recent findings from cruise.co.uk highlight a notable increase in the popularity of multi-generational cruise holidays. According to a survey involving more than 700 customers, a significant 69% of grandparents and parents expressed a heightened willingness to embark on cruises with their extended families, including children, compared to five years prior. This shift underscores a broader trend towards shared family experiences at sea.
Delving deeper into the motivations behind this trend, the survey revealed that over one-third of respondents, approximately 34%, cited the creation of lasting memories as their primary incentive for choosing cruise holidays. Moreover, 28% of participants pointed to the value for money that cruises represent, while 27% were drawn to the variety of on-board activities and entertainment available, showcasing the diverse appeal of such holidays.
The Mediterranean has emerged as the most popular destination for these multi-generational voyages, selected by 63% of the survey participants. The allure of its rich culture, scenic beauty, and favourable climate makes it an attractive choice for families. The Caribbean and Northern Europe also feature prominently, garnering 18% and 10% of the preferences, respectively, illustrating the wide range of destinations that cater to diverse family interests.
Tony Andrews, the managing director of cruise.co.uk, describes cruise holidays as an ‘ideal way to spend quality time’ with loved ones. He emphasises the extensive array of family-friendly activities, both on board and ashore, and the flexible accommodation, entertainment, and dining options available. Andrews also highlights the convenience and cost-effectiveness of cruises, which allow families to visit multiple destinations in a single holiday, thus offering a comprehensive and enriching travel experience.
Earlier in the year, cruise.co.uk’s annual survey indicated that a majority of British customers, over 53%, are certain or very likely to book an ex-UK itinerary in 2024. This further exemplifies the growing preference for cruises as a family holiday option, driven by the combination of memorable experiences, cost efficiency, and flexible travel opportunities.
The tendency towards choosing multi-generational cruise holidays is growing, driven by shared family experiences, diverse destinations, and cost-effectiveness.
