Once viewed as a warning, the FTC fined Facebook a record $5 billion in 2019. That now appears to be the start of a pattern. By 2025, Amazon had reached a $2.5 billion settlement over privacy violations involving Alexa and children’s data. In Texas alone, Alphabet’s Google agreed to pay $1.375 billion for surreptitiously tracking users, including those who believed they were using incognito mode.
