Hirestreet and Asos have jointly introduced a transformative subscription rental service, now available to consumers in the UK. This new offering allows subscribers to select five items each month for a fixed price of £75, providing access to an extensive collection of over 20,000 items from Asos’s inventory. This initiative underscores a pivotal moment in the UK rental market, characterised as the largest collaboration of its kind by Isabella West, CEO of Hirestreet.
West elaborates on the development, indicating that the new service marks a progressive step for the UK’s rental market landscape, which has traditionally trailed behind the United States in subscription rental adoption. She notes that the UK has experienced a substantial shift towards understanding and accepting rental as a viable method of consumption over the past six years, particularly for special events. For many, rental has become a normative choice, supported by hundreds of thousands of active renters comfortable with this consumption model.
Operating out of Newcastle, Hirestreet has distinguished itself by focusing on accessible high street brands, having forayed into the rental space back in 2018. Unlike other platforms, Hirestreet offers collections that cater to broader demographics, excluding high-end designer labels. In the first quarter of 2024, a noticeable surge in demand for casual items prompted a strategic expansion to meet these evolving consumer tastes. West mentions that their total dispatch to customers soared by 200% compared to the previous year, with 40% of bookings reflecting a preference for casual attire.
This new subscription model is not Hirestreet’s first venture with Asos. It follows the success of a prior collaboration that focused on occasion-wear rental services last year. The relationship between the two has grown since then, adapting to the changing demands of their clientele. Furthermore, Hirestreet’s prior partnership with Marks & Spencer, launched in 2021 and later expanded in 2022, has paved the way for their current endeavours, showcasing their aptitude for aligning with top UK retailers.
The Hirestreet and Asos partnership represents a notable evolution in the UK’s rental market dynamics, adapting to consumer demand.
