A prominent law firm based in London is pursuing further acquisitions following its successful merger with a boutique practice renowned for its expertise in entertainment law. This marks a significant move for Hamlins, which has expanded its headcount to 100, now including 20 partners.
The addition of three partners—Stuart Barry, Julian Bentley, and Catherine Fehler—from Swan Turton, alongside two fee-earners, two staff members, and three consultants, notably the founder Julian Turton, underscores this expansion. This strategic acquisition is intended to deepen Hamlins’ services within the media, sport, real estate, retail, leisure, and technology sectors.
Historically, Hamlins has led litigation related to phone hacking against News Group Newspapers, recently taking on claimants against Associated Newspapers. This new acquisition is expected to enrich its offerings, particularly in non-contentious areas, due to the established reputation of Swan Turton in music-related legal services.
With high-profile clients such as Prince Harry, Clare Balding, and sports organisations, along with corporate entities like Foxtons Europe and Palace Capital PLC, Hamlins strengthens its position. The merger with Swan Turton aligns with this direction, especially in the realm of rights and copyright infringement claims, where Hamlins already acts for entities like BMG and PPL PRS Ltd.
Hamlins’ managing partner, Matthew Pryke, noted the acquisition as a pivotal moment, merging two firms excelling in their respective fields. He emphasised the expanded access to services Swan Turton clients would experience, particularly in litigation and advisory roles.
Julian Bentley from Swan Turton expressed the firm’s excitement, pointing out that various offers were evaluated; however, Hamlins’ cultural and strategic fit was unmatched. In his view, the synergy between both firms paved the way for this consolidation.
This transaction aligns with Hamlins’ objective of nurturing its brand and culture while pursuing growth through strategic bolt-ons. The firm’s discreet operational profile is gradually evolving, drawing attention under the senior partnership leadership of Joseph Holder, who recognises the importance of market visibility.
This strategic acquisition marks a transformative phase in Hamlins’ development, enhancing its service scope and market presence.
