The newly inaugurated Regional Distribution Centre (RDC) in Widnes is designed to bolster the operations of 115 NHS Trusts across the North West by supplying essential medical equipment. The strategic importance of this centre lies in its expansive 400,000 square foot area, which replaces an older, smaller facility, providing an unparalleled 600,000 pallet spaces for increased storage.
This facility, operated by NHS Supply Chain and managed by logistics partner Unipart Logistics, marks a substantial investment aimed at enhancing efficiency and resilience within the NHS supply chain. “NHS Supply Chain’s Gorsey Point facility is a major investment in the North West and a significant part of our long-term national growth plans,” stated Andrew New, CEO of NHS Supply Chain. This development aims to future-proof logistics operations and better meet the demands of NHS trusts in the area.
Situated just a few miles from key motorway junctions, the Gorsey Point RDC offers remarkable logistical advantages. Its proximity to junction 7 of the M62 and junction 12 of the M56, along with its closeness to the Mersey Gateway Bridge, facilitates streamlined distribution of medical supplies to approximately 3,500 delivery locations and 18,400 requisition points. Such strategic positioning ensures the timely delivery of medical products necessary for patient care across the region.
The enhancements within this purpose-built facility not only include increased storage capacity but also an expansion of the range of products accessible to the NHS. This supply chain advancement is particularly significant as it aligns with the expressed preferences of NHS Trusts, underlining a concerted effort to improve service reliability and readiness.
Gorsey Point’s operational capabilities are part of a broader strategy by NHS Supply Chain to amplify their logistics prowess regionally. This initiative reflects a commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring the NHS in the North West can address increasing demands with greater agility and capacity.
The operationalisation of Gorsey Point RDC signifies a transformative step in improving NHS supply chain logistics across the North West.
