Whitbread has appointed GMI Construction Group as the main contractor for its ambitious hotel development in Manchester’s city centre. This decision marks another step in Whitbread’s ongoing expansion strategy within the city.
The Rochdale Road site, which Whitbread acquired from Premcor earlier in 2024, is set to host the seventh Premier Inn in Manchester. This new development holds a contract value of £28 million and will bring 229 new bedrooms to one of Manchester’s key locations, just on the edge of the Northern Quarter.
The planned structure is designed to be a 10-storey building, integrating a restaurant, bar, and check-in area on the ground floor. Such amenities are intended to enhance the guest experience and create a modern hospitality space in the heart of the city.
Whitbread’s project and programme manager, Will Steward, expressed optimism about the rapid transformation of the site. He stated that the company aims to leverage GMI’s expertise to begin construction this autumn, thereby pushing forward the brand’s growth in Manchester.
Echoing this sentiment, GMI Construction’s regional director, Anthony Judge, highlighted the strong partnership between GMI and Whitbread. He noted the success of their previous collaboration in Keswick and expressed enthusiasm for contributing to Manchester’s skyline with this distinctive project.
The collaboration between Whitbread and GMI promises to significantly enhance Manchester’s cityscape with the new Premier Inn project.
