GMI Construction has embarked on a significant £50m project, underscoring its aspirations to extend its influence in the southwest of England. The Leeds-based company was appointed as the main contractor for a purpose-built student accommodation scheme in Bristol, marking their maiden major residential venture in the region.
This ambitious project is situated on Avon Street within the Temple Meads Quarter, a site previously occupied by Chanson Foods. The development plan includes the construction of two new apartment blocks offering 447 student rooms, alongside a standalone mixed-use building surrounding an open courtyard. With completion anticipated by September 2026, the project is set to enhance the local infrastructure significantly.
The architectural design for this student accommodation has been crafted by Chapman Taylor. This project not only signifies an important step for GMI into major residential contracts but also bolsters its credentials in constructing multi-occupancy developments. Adam Taylor, GMI’s regional director in the Midlands, expressed immense pride in securing this contract with Host, highlighting the growing need for high-quality student accommodation in Bristol.
GMI’s ambitious strides are not limited to Bristol. The company’s expanding portfolio includes recent and ongoing projects like the 604-bed Carlton Hill development in Leeds and a 167-bed scheme in Birmingham. Additionally, GMI is presently engaged in constructing a £50m, 275-bed development for Olympian Homes and a 303-bed project for S Harrison Developments, both located in York. These efforts reflect GMI’s strategic expansion across different regions in the UK, reinforcing its position in the student accommodation sector.
This contract marks a significant expansion of GMI Construction’s footprint into the southwest region, reinforcing its commitment to high-quality development projects in the UK.
