Fred Sherwood Transport has taken a significant step towards achieving sustainable practices by introducing two 44-tonne Volvo FH Electric 6×2 tractor units into its fleet. This strategic move aligns with the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint through electric mobility.
The two electric trucks have been seamlessly incorporated into operations, specifically for waste and recycling tasks near the company’s headquarters in Shepshed. They are paired with innovative walking floor trailers from Titan, enhancing their operational efficiency and utility.
Justin Sherwood, a director at Fred Sherwood Group, has expressed the company’s dedication to sustainability, stating, “We are working hard towards our sustainability ambitions, that’s the reason we have gone down the electric route.” This decision reflects a proactive approach to addressing environmental concerns.
Volvo Trucks has been a trusted partner throughout this transition, providing essential support. The delivery includes vehicles equipped with six batteries, offering a range of approximately 300 kilometres. This capability allows them to perform efficiently on designated routes.
Driver feedback on these electric vehicles has been extremely positive, with reports highlighting the smoother, quieter performance compared to diesel counterparts. The company anticipates an operational range of roughly 180 miles, focusing on back-to-base trips with overnight charging facilitated at their depot using Volvo-supplied wall-box AC 43kW chargers.
The power for these chargers is intended to be drawn from solar panels installed on the workshop roof, underscoring a holistic approach to clean energy utilisation. The initiative is already stirring interest among customers eager to leverage this technology for their own environmental targets.
Fred Sherwood Transport’s adoption of electric trucks underscores its proactive strategy in sustainable transport innovation.
