Felixstowe Port has taken a significant step by introducing a new Container Booking System (CBS) designed to enhance terminal efficiency and improve the haulier experience. This move comes amid concerns expressed by hauliers who fear potential increases in costs and delays. These worries were brought into the spotlight when the Road Haulage Association (RHA) highlighted what they perceive as a lack of consultation ahead of the system’s implementation.
Robert Ashton, Felixstowe Port’s Chief Operating Officer, addressed these apprehensions, asserting that hauliers will ultimately benefit from this upgrade. He emphasized the achievements of the current system, the Vehicle Booking System (VBS), which was introduced nearly two decades ago to reduce queues, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and alleviate congestion. The upcoming CBS offers enhanced features aimed at further boosting operational efficiency, which Ashton believes will result in a better experience for hauliers.
Understanding the community’s apprehension, the port has opted for a phased approach, introducing a 12-week trial run of the new system. This trial, set to precede the full launch in October, has been positively received by RHA Chief Executive Richard Smith. He welcomed the trial and the port’s commitment to increased collaboration with hauliers, underscoring the port’s pivotal economic role both locally and nationally. Smith urged the port management to consider all feedback comprehensively, given the port’s criticality within the UK’s supply chain.
