Expedia Group has introduced sustainability initiatives aimed at empowering destination management organisations (DMOs) globally.
- The Destination Climate Champions programme offers DMOs tools to tackle climate change effectively.
- Through the Destination Giveback Initiative, local communities benefit from targeted tourism growth.
- Partnership with Travel Foundation enriches the training and support available to DMOs.
- Destination Canada has already received support through the Giveback Initiative.
Expedia Group has rolled out two forward-thinking sustainability programmes, aimed at assisting destination management organisations (DMOs) in their efforts to tackle climate change and bolster local communities. The programmes, known as the Destination Climate Champions and the Destination Giveback Initiative, are integral components of the group’s broader Open World social impact and sustainability strategy.
The Destination Climate Champions programme provides DMOs with the necessary resources to implement climate action plans effectively. Developed in collaboration with the Travel Foundation, a respected industry non-governmental organisation, the programme includes a complimentary online training course and a peer learning network, both designed to aid DMO staff in formulating and promoting a destination-specific climate action plan. This programme is currently being piloted with 30 destinations across Europe, New Zealand, the northwest of the United States, and Canada, with plans for global accessibility later this year.
Rob Torres, who serves as the senior vice-president for media solutions at Expedia Group, highlights the increasing importance of sustainability within the travel sector. He remarks, “We understand that for many of our partners, the topic of sustainability is an urgent issue to address, but is often complex, and it can be hard to know how to put words into meaningful action.” This partnership with the Travel Foundation reflects a shared vision of fostering a travel industry that is mindful of both people and the planet.
The Destination Giveback Initiative represents a concerted effort by Expedia Group to donate to local causes, thereby supporting community development while simultaneously driving tourism growth. The initiative has already been implemented in partnership with Destination Canada, resulting in Expedia Group donating $100,000 to the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC).
Overall, these initiatives signify a commitment not only to environmental responsibility but also to social impact, paving the way for sustainable travel practices that can be adopted worldwide. Expedia Group’s dedication to empowering travellers to make more responsible choices underscores the evolving nature of travel in today’s environmentally-conscious landscape.
Expedia’s initiatives mark a significant step towards sustainable and socially responsible travel.
