Plans are underway to significantly extend the current park-and-ride facilities at the Tyldesley hub in Wigan. The project will introduce more than 100 new parking spaces aimed primarily at serving commuters who use the Leigh Guided Busway. The facility will also include enhanced security measures, such as improved lighting and CCTV systems, as well as amenities like parcel lockers and a staff office.
Local political figures have shown strong support for the expansion. Leigh MP Jo Platt and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham are among those who have backed the development. Councillor Joanne Marshall expressed optimism about the project’s potential benefits once it opens at the end of 2025, stating her confidence that both residents and local businesses will gain from alleviated parking congestion in the area. Adding to this sentiment, Jo Platt highlighted her enduring commitment to the project, emphasising her previous and ongoing advocacy for similar facilities in nearby Atherton.

Jamieson Contracting Ltd has been commissioned to prepare the design for this expansion, with the expectation that full planning permission will be submitted to the Wigan council shortly. Recently, local residents and business owners were invited to a public engagement session where they were briefed on the project specifications and objectives.
