Crystal Palace Football Club has reached a significant milestone with the full approval to expand its stadium at Selhurst Park. This long-anticipated development aims to increase the stadium’s capacity by over 8,000 seats, bringing the total to more than 34,000. The project will feature a new glass-fronted main stand, a striking infrastructure update accommodating 13,500 fans compared to the current stand’s 5,200-seat capacity.
Significant features of the new development include three tiers of seating, which will not only enhance the viewing experience for fans but also include a new club shop, museum, and café. The design also focuses on accessibility improvements for supporters with disabilities, reflecting a wider commitment to inclusivity in sports venues. Importantly, the new structure is designed to operate at net-zero emissions, aligning with contemporary environmental targets.
The expansion plans encountered numerous delays, initially submitted to Croydon Council in 2018, with progress hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, adjustments were necessary following recommendations from a fire engineer, showcasing the club’s dedication to safety and regulatory compliance.
A pivotal aspect of the development was the relocation of tenants residing in six affordable homes on Wooderson Close, slated for demolition as part of the expansion. Ensuring these tenants were rehoused by the council, Crystal Palace FC has also legally committed to replace the homes, affirming its responsibility towards affordable housing in the borough.
Steve Parish, Chair of Crystal Palace FC, emphasised the club’s dedication to this project, highlighting significant resources committed to completing the detailed design of the stand. Enabling works commenced earlier this summer, with final plans and costings anticipated soon. The selection of a construction partner will follow, marking a crucial next step in actualising the club’s vision.
The stadium expansion at Selhurst Park marks an important progression for Crystal Palace FC amidst a wave of similar projects across the Premier League.
