In a clear sign of recovery, the cruise industry witnessed a robust resurgence in 2023, with passenger numbers surpassing those seen before the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the industry saw 31.7 million people embarking on cruises, a 7% increment over the figures recorded in 2019.
The United States maintained its leading position as the world’s largest cruise market, contributing 18.1 million passengers to the global total. Meanwhile, Europe followed with a substantial 8.2 million cruisers. The United Kingdom saw a notable 15% rise in its cruise passenger numbers, from 1.9 million in 2019 to 2.2 million in 2023.
Expedition cruising, renowned for its adventurous itineraries, experienced the fastest growth rate within the industry. This niche sector saw a remarkable 71% surge in passengers from 2019 to 2023, highlighting a growing appetite for unique travel experiences.
Looking ahead, the CLIA forecasts a continual increase in cruise demand, predicting passenger numbers to reach 39.4 million by 2027. To accommodate this rising demand, the industry is set to expand its capacity significantly; over 56 new ships are slated for introduction between 2024 and 2028, collectively adding 68,000 berths.
Kelly Craighead, CLIA’s president and chief executive, emphasised the resilience and growth of the cruise sector, noting that it outpaces the recovery of general international tourist arrivals. Craighead stated, ‘Cruise is the best vacation value there is, with incredible guest experiences delivered by a talented and dedicated multinational workforce of nearly 300,000 seafarers.’
The cruise industry demonstrates remarkable resilience and optimism with passenger numbers and capacity poised to grow significantly.
