Cruise holidays are increasingly capturing the interest of families, presenting a mix of convenience, value, and diverse experiences. The latest report by Abta highlights a notable rise in families with young children opting for cruises over traditional beach holidays. Such trips offer multiple destinations in one journey, making them particularly attractive. Moreover, preferences are evolving, with a shift towards shorter, UK-based or wellness-focused cruises. The desire to connect with like-minded individuals and the emphasis on value steadily drive this trend.
Recent findings indicate a surge in the popularity of cruise holidays among families, especially those with young children. The latest Abta Holiday Habits report reveals that while 48% of surveyed individuals preferred beach holidays in the past year, 12% favoured cruises. This inclination is expected to rise, with projections indicating an increase in the cruising population to 17% in the coming year from an average of 14%.
Cruises offer the distinct advantage of visiting multiple destinations during a single voyage. This, combined with the convenience and value for money that they typically provide, positions cruise holidays as a favourable choice for families. They assure a safe, secure travel experience enriched with a variety of onboard activities and entertainment options, catering to diverse interests and age groups.
The report notes a doubling in the proportion of holidaymakers with children choosing cruises over the past five years. Pre-Covid data from 2019 showed only 8% of such families opting for cruises, a figure that has risen to 15% in the current survey. As this demographic continues to lean towards cruising, there are noticeable shifts in preferred types and durations of cruises.
Families with children now show a marked preference for cruises around the UK, cited by 51% of respondents as opposed to 55% opting for ocean cruises. This interest is closely followed by wellness cruises (44%) and, subsequently, ocean cruises (42%). The preference for closer-to-home options translates into a greater interest in shorter trips.
The social aspect of cruises also resonates strongly with families. Approximately 49% of families reported that the opportunity to meet like-minded people was a significant attraction, surpassing the average interest level of 31%. Additionally, the financial aspect is of considerable importance; 56% of families with young children emphasised value for money as a key factor, compared to 48% overall.
The growing affinity for cruise holidays among families is evidently transforming the travel landscape, with preferences leaning towards value, social interaction, and diverse experiences.
