Recent findings indicate a significant reduction in the average age of cruise passengers.
- The average age of cruise guests has declined from 66 in 2019 to 55 in 2024.
- This decline is attributed to the increasing popularity of multi-generational travel.
- New cruise ships offering family-friendly attractions have expanded the cruise market.
- Shorter cruise itineraries have become more popular, especially among younger travellers.
A recent study, involving a comprehensive analysis of nearly 500,000 passengers, has brought to light a significant demographic shift in cruise tourism. The average age of cruise passengers has experienced an 11-year reduction, dropping from 66 years in 2019 to 55 years in 2024. This notable decrease underscores the evolving trends within the cruise industry.
Several factors have contributed to this demographic change. A surge in multi-generational travel has played a pivotal role, as families are increasingly inclined to embark on cruise holidays together. This trend is complemented by the introduction of new ships that feature a range of family-friendly activities and itineraries. These innovations have, in turn, attracted a younger audience to the cruise market.
In parallel with these findings, an online sister company, Seascanner, has reported similar trends. The average booking age for 2024 to date stands at 42 years, which highlights a three-year decrease from figures recorded in 2022. Tony Andrews, managing director of the cruise specialist company, emphasised the appeal of cruises, stating, “Passengers of all ages are discovering that a holiday at sea offers a host of one-of-a-kind experiences, both onboard and ashore, with activities designed to appeal to all tastes.”
Further insights reveal that the cruise market has also seen a spike in the popularity of shorter cruise itineraries, ranging from two to six nights. These shorter trips have increasingly outsold longer departures, offering an ‘accessible choice’ for those new to the concept of cruising. This shift in preference has been particularly evident among younger travellers, aligning with the broader trend of an expanding customer demographic.
The Cruise Lines International Association reported that in 2023, passengers from the UK & Ireland accounted for a record 2.3 million sea-based holidays, underlining the growing interest in cruise travel. This data serves as a testament to the ongoing changes within the industry, reflecting a broader appeal and growing customer base.
The cruise industry is witnessing a dynamic transformation, appealing to more diverse age groups and preferences.
