While delivering crushed concrete, Alleyne’s vehicle crane came into contact with an overhead powerline, causing electrocution. BBM Contracts, the firm responsible for the construction site, failed to exercise necessary caution despite being aware of the existing overhead powerlines. The company had designated the delivery area directly beneath these lines, neglecting to explore safer alternatives or to establish demarcations and warnings as preventive measures.
This incident occurred on Swallowfield Road, Reading, on 16 November 2020, yet its repercussions were felt much later when BBM Contracts faced accountability under health and safety regulations. As stated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the company pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 13(1) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, which eventually led to a fine of £30,000 by the Reading Magistrates’ Court.
HSE principal inspector Georgina Symons highlighted the preventable nature of this tragedy, emphasising the availability of extensive guidance on handling overhead powerline risks. Symons stated, “This tragic incident led to the death of a father of four.
