Consumer watchdog Research by Which? has announced results of an investigation that found the surcharges airlines add for booking reservations over the phone is a subtle form of discrimination against older people, the agency said.
The investigation found that for bookings made over the phone, Ryanair and TUI added a GBP 20 surcharge, easyJet GBP 15 and British Airways GBP 10.
Following the findings, TUI UK said it charged additional fees to cover the administrative costs of the call centres that handled the bookings.
easyJet said it encourages passengers to book online and those who use the telephone service are clearly informed of the online discount at the beginning of the call.
