Morgan Sindall has marked the beginning of an ambitious construction project in Splott, Cardiff, with a ceremonial ground-breaking for the new Willows High School. The initiative represents a significant investment of £60 million, aimed at relocating and expanding the current school facilities.
The new campus will replace the existing Willows High School and will boast a capacity to accommodate 900 pupils aged between 11 and 16. This endeavour also includes a dedicated special resource base designed to support up to 30 students who have complex learning needs, thus enhancing educational inclusivity and provision in the region.
In alignment with the Welsh government’s commitment to sustainability, the new school building will be constructed to achieve net zero carbon emissions. This includes both embodied carbon, referring to the carbon dioxide emitted during the manufacture of building materials, and operational carbon, linked to the energy used during the building’s life cycle.
Construction activities have been underway since August 2023 with Morgan Sindall carrying out enabling works. These works have involved comprehensive preparations such as the installation of new utilities, relocation of existing services, and significant groundwork, including clearing contaminated materials from the site and securing the area with fencing.
The construction is expected to reach completion in the 2026/27 academic year, providing ample time for the development of a facility that not only promises modern amenities but also conforms to strict environmental standards, setting a benchmark for future educational infrastructure in the region.
The transformative project for Willows High School underscores a commitment to educational excellence and sustainability in Cardiff.
