In August 2023, competition for jobs in the UK surged significantly, reaching its highest level since January 2021.
- The number of job applications increased by over a third, marking a 38.3% year-on-year rise.
- Social care, education, IT, construction, and distribution sectors saw major increases in applications.
- Regions such as East Midlands, North West, and West Midlands experienced marked growth in applicants.
- This rise is attributed to a high cost of living and shifts in the job market.
The United Kingdom’s job market experienced a notable shift in August 2023, as confirmed by data from a leading independent job board. The month saw a 38.3% increase in the number of job applications per listing, compared to the previous year. Such a surge in applications is reflective of an increasingly competitive environment for job seekers, reminiscent of conditions last observed in January 2021.
The analysis, conducted by the job board in August, traditionally a quieter month in recruitment, highlights this heightened competition. The assessment centred around thousands of job postings and millions of applications, calculating an average application-to-job ratio that soared to levels not seen for nearly three years.
Significant increases were noted across various sectors. Social care led with a 142.8% rise in applications per job, followed by the education sector at 64%. IT, construction, and distribution also recorded notable increments at 60%, 39.8%, and 39.2% respectively. These figures indicate a growing interest and perhaps a rising demand for jobs within these industries, highlighting evolving trends in the job market.
Regionally, the data showcases substantial growth in applications in several areas. The East Midlands recorded a 54.4% increase, while the North West and West Midlands observed rises of 49.4% and 47.3% respectively. Additionally, the North East and South West also experienced noteworthy advancements, reflecting 46% and 45.5% growth in job applications. These regional insights suggest broader economic shifts affecting job seekers across the country.
Commenting on the findings, Lee Biggins, Founder and CEO of CV-Library, stated, “The job market is undoubtedly shifting. While job vacancies are still high, they’ve fallen from their peak levels in July 2022, and jobseekers are up against more applicants than they have been since January 2021.” He further noted the impact of the cost of living, saying, “as it continues to squeeze, we are seeing more candidates returning to the job market looking to increase or supplement their income.”
The recent data underscores a competitive job market driven by economic factors and shifts in demand across regions and sectors.
