The development of a new specialist paediatric hospital in Cambridge is progressing significantly with the clearance of its outline business case. This milestone indicates secured funding streams, enabling the initiation of the detailed contractor selection process. Main construction is anticipated to start in 2026, following the tender launch in January 2025. The hospital aims to integrate paediatric care and research, costing approximately £214.9 million.
The Cambridge Children’s Hospital, a new specialist paediatric facility, is moving closer to fruition following the Treasury and health ministry’s approval of its outline business case. This crucial step confirms that the project has secured the necessary funding streams, paving the way for selecting a main contractor—a process set to commence in January 2025.
The project, valued at £214.9 million, is spearheaded by a collaboration between the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, and Cambridge University. The hospital is designed to integrate mental and physical paediatric care with pioneering research into childhood illnesses, establishing a unique centre of excellence for the East of England.
Construction is planned to begin in 2026, with the hospital’s completion projected for early 2029. The building will boast a BREEAM Excellent rating, reflecting its sustainable design across five storeys and a 35,000 square metre footprint, which includes a 5,000 square metre research institute affiliated with Cambridge University.
Preconstruction activities have already commenced on the 46,200 square metre brownfield site located opposite the Rosie Maternity Hospital and are being managed by RG Carter, a contractor based in Norwich. These early works, which include connecting services to the site, constructing access roads, and site excavation, were completed last month.
Dr. Rob Heuschkel, clinical lead for the future hospital, expressed his enthusiasm, stating that the green light for moving forward with construction is a significant moment. Mace Consult is managing the delivery of this project, working alongside a design team featuring firms such as HawkinsBrown, White Arkitektker, and Ramboll, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this ambitious endeavour.
The Cambridge Children’s Hospital project exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to paediatric healthcare and research in the UK.
