The CLIA Conference 2023, a pivotal gathering in the cruise industry calendar, underscored the rising interest and increased participation in cruise holidays. More than 750 attendees gathered in Southampton to hear from Ben Bouldin, CLIA chair, who asserted that “the world is waking up to what a cruise holiday is all about.” His statements were well-received at this influential travel agent event.
Bouldin highlighted the record-breaking forecast of over two million passengers in 2023, signifying unparalleled openness to cruise travel. A notable 65% of delegates were attending the conference for the first time, and around a quarter had no previous experience on a cruise, indicating significant new interest.
Ship visits were a key feature, providing practical exposure on vessels such as MSC Virtuosa, Fred Olsen’s Balmoral, Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas, and P&O Cruises’ Arvia. This hands-on experience was invaluable for agents, especially those new to the cruise market.
Sustainability emerged as a major focus, with an emphasis on the cruise industry’s role in a greener future. Bouldin stressed the need for cross-sector collaboration to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Lisa Lutoff-Perlo of Royal Caribbean Group echoed this sentiment, emphasising the industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
In the luxury segment, Silversea’s Barbara Muckermann outlined the substantial opportunities within the $2 billion luxury cruising market. She stressed that expedition cruising represents a unique avenue for introducing non-cruisers to the experience, revealing untapped potential for growth.
To facilitate these opportunities, CLIA announced an ambitious 12-month trade engagement campaign. This initiative includes extensive ship visit schedules across the UK and Ireland, specialist webinars covering various cruise sectors, and a series of events designed to engage and educate agents on the benefits of cruising.
Andy Harmer, CLIA UK & Ireland MD, expressed enthusiasm over the record attendance and success of the conference, highlighting the expanding opportunities for agents within the cruise sector. His comments reflect the growing momentum and optimism surrounding the industry.
The 2023 CLIA Conference showcased a cruise industry on the cusp of significant growth, driven by innovation and a commitment to sustainability.
