Cathay Pacific has achieved a significant milestone by carrying over two million passengers in July 2024. This marks the first time since the pandemic that such numbers have been reached.
In July 2024, Cathay Pacific successfully transported more than two million passengers, a landmark achievement since the pandemic’s inception. This surge was attributed primarily to the increasing demand for long-haul flights, which played a pivotal role in the airline’s resurgence.
The notable growth in passenger numbers was significantly influenced by heightened demand for long-haul routes, particularly to and from Cathay Pacific’s hub in Hong Kong. In the first half of July, the carrier experienced a robust influx of travellers, especially among students and individuals visiting family and friends.
Moreover, the airline observed an increase in bookings for short-haul destinations, largely focused on Japan and Southeast Asia. This trend emerged more prominently in the latter half of the month.
The Olympic Games in Paris further contributed to the surge in passenger numbers.
Cathay Pacific experienced a substantial uptick in demand for flights to Paris, where it not only transported ordinary passengers but also a significant number of athletes and spectators.
This sporting event proved to be a massive draw, showcasing Cathay Pacific’s capacity to handle increased traffic efficiently during global events.
Looking ahead, Cathay Pacific anticipates the continuation of strong travel demand into August and September, particularly as students prepare to return to the United Kingdom for the new academic year. Continued demand is expected to bolster the airline’s recovery trajectory.
The airline recently launched a four-times-weekly service to Ningbo, which has been met with favourable reception among passengers.
HK Express, a Cathay Pacific subsidiary, is set to commence a new route between Hong Kong and Penang in November. The addition of such routes aligns with Cathay Pacific’s strategy to expand its network substantially across Asia.
This strategic expansion underscores the airline’s commitment to broadening its global reach and providing passengers with a diverse range of travel destinations.
By 2025, the group aims to serve 100 destinations, reflecting its aggressive growth plans and dedication to meeting passenger demand.
Despite the increase in passenger numbers, July’s load factor of 85.5% was slightly lower than the previous year, down by 3.8 percentage points from July 2023. This slight decline indicates a varied distribution of available capacity across different routes.
Nevertheless, this load factor remains the highest recorded for any month in the current year, underscoring the increasing passenger confidence in air travel post-pandemic.
Cathay Pacific’s management remains optimistic about sustaining the growth in passenger numbers beyond the summer months. They foresee buoyant demand continuing into the autumn, driven by traditional travel patterns and emerging new routes.
The recent achievements by Cathay Pacific in passenger numbers exemplify the airline’s successful rebound post-pandemic. With strategic route expansions and ongoing demand, the airline is poised for continued growth.
