Campeys of Selby made a significant impact in February 2023 by becoming the first UK haulage company to integrate a 19-tonne battery-electric DAF LF truck into its fleet. Historically, Campeys has been expanding its fleet with a mix of technologies since 2021, including the acquisition of 12 CNG tractor units. Harry Campey, the commercial and operations director, emphasises that embracing new technologies such as electric trucks is vital for the company’s future. This move is seen as a necessary step in maintaining not just commercial leverage but also meeting consumer demands for lower emissions in the supply chain.
While expressing scepticism regarding hydrogen’s efficiency in decarbonising road transport, Harry Campey advocates strongly for electric vehicles—particularly for short-range applications like return-to-depot, collection, and delivery services. He indicates that the company’s current fleet includes six rigids, poised for electrification, while replacing all tractor units with CNG is not yet viable.

His father, Paul Campey, revitalised the company in 2005, and under Harry’s stewardship, the fleet has expanded rapidly.
