BR Saunders Transport, a family-run business based in Walton-on-Thames, has taken a significant step towards enhancing vehicle safety. The company, with over 60 vehicles in its fleet, is broadening the trial of CogLock, a device designed to prevent HGV wheel detachment. CogLock offers a dual benefit of a visual indicator and a secure locking mechanism, providing a substantial improvement in safety measures.
The motivation for expanding these trials arises from alarming statistics. Research by the Transport Research Laboratory highlights that annually, the UK witnesses between 150 and 400 wheel detachments, with up to 27 resulting in injury and several fatalities. These figures underscore the critical importance of effective wheel security measures.
CogLock has been positively received during its initial phase on a Volvo FM12. “The trial is going very well,” stated Duncan Saunders, senior operations manager at BR Saunders. “Drivers particularly appreciate the visual element of CogLock, offering significant reassurance of no wheel loss.” Given the feedback, the company is committed to integrating CogLocks more widely across its operations.
The consequences of wheel detachment extend beyond immediate harm. Transport lawyers Backhouse Jones have cautioned that such incidents invariably lead to formal investigations. These may take the form of unanticipated maintenance checks or desk-based assessments by the DVSA, irrespective of whether any injuries occur. Non-compliance can result in public inquiries and serious repercussions for operators and drivers alike.
Chris Coghill, the founder of CogLock, expressed enthusiasm about BR Saunders’ decision to expand the trial. “It’s fantastic news,” he remarked, emphasising the device’s user-friendly design and minimal maintenance needs. All staff, including operators and drivers, receive comprehensive training, and vehicles equipped with CogLocks feature a QR code for easy access to operating instructions.
