Bowker Transport has taken a significant step by incorporating an advanced fleet management system using Webfleet and VisionTrack technologies. This strategic move is targeted at enhancing driver safety, boosting fuel efficiency, and cutting down CO2 emissions within its operations involving 225 heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).
A crucial component of this system is the seamless integration of a driver app with the Pro8475 ruggedised tablet. This technology enables direct communication of job tasks and navigation instructions to drivers, ensuring smoother and safer journeys by helping drivers avoid traffic congestion and challenging routes such as low bridges and narrow roads. The Pro8475, coupled with Webfleet’s truck-specific navigation, is revolutionising route management for Bowker’s drivers.
In addition to route optimisation, the Webfleet system includes OptiDrive 360’s active feedback mechanism, which has been well-received by drivers. This feature provides instantaneous feedback and advice, fostering safer and more efficient driving habits. Mark Brewell, Bowker’s IT manager, acknowledged the system’s efficiency, stating that it eliminates the need for collating information from multiple systems, thereby streamlining operations significantly.
Further enhancing safety, a 360-degree AI-based camera solution has been incorporated. This allows seamless integration of real-time vehicle data and camera images, giving traffic desks quick access to footage in the event of an incident. “If there is a customer issue or an incident, we can view the camera images in seconds,” Brewell pointed out, emphasising the system’s capabilities in handling unforeseen situations.
In line with its ambitious net-zero goals, Bowker is conducting a 12-month trial at its Droitwich depot to transition its fleet and forklift trucks to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel. Additionally, the company’s environmental initiatives include the procurement of a fully electric Volvo FE 6-wheel rigid truck to be operated from its Preston site, showcasing Bowker’s forward-thinking approach to sustainable transport solutions.
Adding to its accolades, Bowker was recently honoured with the Northern Haulage Company of the Year award at the 2024 Transport News Awards, a testament to its innovative strategies and leadership in the sector.
Bowker Transport’s integration of advanced technology signifies its commitment to safety and sustainability.
