Biffa, a prominent entity in the waste management sector, has officially acquired L&S Waste Management, a key operator in construction and demolition (C&D) waste management located on the South Coast. This strategic acquisition is anticipated to significantly amplify Biffa’s capabilities within the C&D sector, particularly across vital urban locales served by L&S, including Southampton, Portsmouth, Fareham, and Chichester.
The acquisition falls within Biffa’s broader strategy to advance its low carbon recycling solutions portfolio, catering extensively to local authority and industrial clients across the UK. By assimilating L&S Waste Management’s operations, Biffa aims to augment the availability of recycled materials for the construction industry—a sector increasingly steering towards sustainable practices.
Established in 1997, L&S Waste Management has a longstanding operational footprint in the region, underscored by its two major recycling facilities in Southampton and Portsmouth. These facilities, with a combined annual capacity of 225,000 tonnes, alongside a transfer station in Fareham and a fleet of 91 collection vehicles, establish a robust waste management network.
Biffa, which maintains other C&D processing facilities in cities like Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Birmingham, and Cardiff, as well as being a major supplier of waste skips, will sustain L&S Waste Management’s operations under its existing brand name. This decision preserves the regional brand identity that L&S Waste Management has cultivated over the years.
Marc Angell, Biffa’s MD of construction and demolition, expressed enthusiasm about the merger, emphasising that it further reinforces Biffa’s service offering in the C&D market. He lauded L&S for its strong regional establishment and dedication to quality, aspects that align seamlessly with Biffa’s strategic aims.
Mick Balch, Managing Director of L&S Waste Management, welcomed the acquisition as a precursor to a new, exciting phase in the company’s history. Balch reassured clients that the L&S brand and its dedicated team will continue to deliver sustainable services, now enriched by Biffa’s extensive resources and expertise.
This acquisition is poised to enhance Biffa’s market influence and drive its sustainability mission forward.
