Barrhead Travel is nearing a second consecutive record-breaking year, as per the statements made during the company’s recent conference in Ibiza. In 2024, the agency’s cruise business has recorded a 13% growth year-on-year. This increase in bookings largely attributes to the consistent performance of cruise holidays, especially those departing from Southampton and Miami, contributing to the company’s most successful Sunshine Saturday yet. January and April were particularly noteworthy months for Barrhead, marking a near twenty-fold rise in river cruise bookings and an overall robust performance in sea-bound travel.
Commenting on this remarkable achievement, Jacqueline Dobson, the president of Barrhead’s parent company, Internova Travel Group, expressed pride in the efforts of Barrhead’s agent members. She acknowledged the challenges faced throughout the year, such as political instability, severe weather, and technological outages, yet praised the agency’s resilience and outstanding results. It is evident from the nine consecutive record-breaking months that 2024 has been exceptional, with expectations running high for even more growth as Barrhead nears its 50th anniversary.
Significant investment in the cruise segment has been pivotal to Barrhead’s success. According to Nicki Tempest-Mitchell, the company’s focus on luxury cruise holidays has led to a 3% increase compared to 2023, alongside a 14% rise in mainstream cruise bookings. Key destinations such as the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Northern Europe, and Alaska have become major attractions for travellers.
The agency’s strategic enhancement of its river cruise offerings has resulted in a 43% uptick in bookings. By hiring river cruise specialists in all its branches, Barrhead has effectively tapped into a lucrative market. Linda Pyle, directing Barrhead’s homeworking and MSTP division, has acknowledged the comprehensive product offering as a driving force behind the growth in cruise sales. The agency’s members have thus effectively capitalised on this burgeoning market.
Industry stakeholders, including CLIA UK and Ireland managing director Andy Harmer, underscore the current appeal of cruise travel. He emphasises that cruise enthusiasm remains high among both cruisers and non-cruisers, supported by a well-managed growth strategy for the ocean-going fleet. Additionally, industry leaders at the conference stressed the integral role of experience in selling cruises, highlighting the trend where travellers increasingly seek to immerse themselves in local culture, history, and cuisine. This shift towards experiential travel has been further propelled by the social media-driven desire for unique and shareable experiences.
Barrhead Travel’s strategic focus and resilience in the cruise market are paving the way for another unprecedented year of growth and success.
