The Association of Touring and Adventure Suppliers (Atas), committed to advancing sustainability in travel, has recently announced significant initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impacts. They have introduced a new online hub dedicated to providing travel agents with regular advice and tips on sustainable practices. This platform forms a critical part of Atas’ strategy to embed sustainability as a core tenet of their operations and the industry at large.
One of the landmark ventures is a fam trip to Lake Como, meticulously organised to be more environmentally conscious. In collaboration with Intrepid, 14 agents will travel by train, offering a more relaxed journey that reduces carbon emissions substantially compared to air travel. Overall, 50 agents will participate, enjoying opportunities to appreciate scenic vistas while contributing to a smaller ecological footprint.
Further underpinning this commitment, Atas plans to disseminate weekly environmental tips to agents. The advice, ranging from reducing waste to adopting meat-free options and engaging sustainable partners, is aimed at empowering agents to adopt greener practices. Through newsletters and social media, Atas ensures a continuous flow of practical, implementable strategies for sustainability.
In addition to these initiatives, Atas is planning a webinar to mark Earth Day, with a focus on climate awareness. Dr Susanne Etti from Intrepid Travel will lead a presentation on ‘Climate Reality’, echoing the insights of Al Gore. This event underscores Atas’ dedication to educating and involving its members and agents in sustainability conversations.
A noteworthy development is the formation of a sustainability working group comprising representatives from Atas tour operator members. This group will focus on implementing the sustainability initiatives discussed during the latest conference, ensuring ongoing progress in their sustainability journey.
Atas is steadfast in its mission to lead the travel industry towards more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.
