Ambassador Cruise Line has altered its Christmas 2023 schedule, impacting many passengers.
- The company’s vessel, Ambience, required immediate maintenance due to unexpected propeller and stern bearing damage.
- To accommodate guests, Ambience’s itinerary is swapped with Ambition’s, affecting over 6,600 passengers.
- Ambition’s West Indies journey and certain festive events have been cancelled or rescheduled.
- Chief Executive Christian Verhounig issued an apology for the disruptions caused during the holiday season.
Ambassador Cruise Line has announced changes to its planned itinerary for December 2023, which will affect a large number of passengers. The adjustments arise from a pressing need for the cruise ship Ambience to undergo essential maintenance work in Germany, specifically addressing propeller shaft and stern bearing damage. This issue was discovered during routine inspections and necessitated the vessel’s extended stay in dry dock to prevent environmental hazards such as oil leaks.
Christian Verhounig, the Chief Executive of Ambassador Cruise Line, explained the situation, indicating that operational continuity was maintained by substituting Ambience’s itinerary with Ambition’s. This strategic decision was made in light of the fact that over 6,600 bookings were made on Ambience, as opposed to 800 on Ambition, aiming to minimise inconvenience to the majority of their guests. Verhounig candidly acknowledged, “It is never an easy decision to change or cancel any Ambassador sailing, particularly at this time of year, and I would personally like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
As a result of these changes, Ambition’s scheduled West Indies voyage on 11 December has been cancelled, alongside Ambience’s Festive Event lunch and dinner on 9 December. Moreover, the originally planned German Christmas Markets cruise on 10 December aboard Ambience will now be executed by Ambition, albeit with a reduced duration and an adjusted itinerary that includes an overnight stay in Antwerp instead of a port call in Hamburg.
Additional modifications include the relocation of Ambience’s Festive Event dining on 15 and 16 December to Ambition, as well as its Festive Market Getaway on 17 December. Furthermore, the Christmas & New Year voyage, now commandeered by Ambition, will extend from 16 to 17 nights, returning to Tilbury on 7 January and featuring a stop in Rotterdam on 6 January.
The schedule adjustments have been designed to accommodate the necessary maintenance of the Ambience while striving to maintain the planned festive experiences of their passengers. Such operational decisions underscore the complexities involved in cruise management, particularly when dealing with unexpected technical challenges and ensuring passenger satisfaction.
Ambassador’s adjustments to its festive cruise schedule illustrate the cruise line’s commitment to addressing maintenance needs while attempting to minimise passenger disruption.
