Alzheimer’s Society, renowned as the leading dementia charity in the United Kingdom, is embarking on a significant initiative to confront the often-overlooked realities of dementia. By launching the ‘Behind Closed Doors’ campaign, the charity seeks to underscore the profound challenges posed by dementia, categorised as the preeminent health and social care crisis of our era. This initiative is designed to provide an immersive experience, allowing individuals to engage on a deeply personal level and offering a platform for those affected to share their narratives.
Situated in St Ann’s Square, Manchester, the ‘Behind Closed Doors’ installation will be accessible to the public on Saturday, 5th October, from 8am until 5pm. The event is free, fully accessible, and encourages visitors to participate actively. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to evocative portrayals of real-life experiences shared through phone calls to Alzheimer’s Society’s Support Line, vividly brought to life by a cadre of well-known supporters. This feature promises to bring authenticity and urgency to the conversation around dementia.
Central to the exhibition’s goals is the intention to galvanise the community and bring the topic of dementia out of obscurity and into the public sphere. By welcoming individuals to contribute their own stories and engage with the narratives presented, the event aims not only to raise awareness but also to stimulate political action and prioritisation regarding dementia. The interactive element, where participants can lend their voices either at the physical installation or on the charity’s platform at alzheimers.org.uk/stories, is a critical aspect of this community-driven approach.
Through collective storytelling and public engagement, Alzheimer’s Society’s campaign seeks to make dementia a national priority.
