Aecom, a leader in engineering, has been awarded a substantial contract by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This contract is valued at £70 million and aims to enhance infrastructure projects on a global scale. It is in line with the G7 Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI), a key initiative introduced at the G7 Summit in 2022 to foster infrastructure development in developing countries.
The G7 PGI seeks to channel investments into sustainable, high-quality infrastructure programs that are essential for developing nations. It focuses on crucial areas such as clean energy, transportation, digital advancement, agriculture, and health. These efforts are directed towards creating economic corridors that can spur broader development.
Aecom is tasked with mobilising technical experts to lead projects in fields like rail, port, clean energy, digital technology, and food security. A vital part of their role includes providing guidance on navigating technical, legal, and regulatory challenges, which are often barriers to progress in these regions. Additionally, Aecom will play a crucial role in facilitating private investments to bolster these development efforts.
In recent years, the United States has made significant contributions towards the PGI’s objectives, investing over $60 billion through various channels, including federal funding and private sector collaboration. The ambitious target is to raise $200 billion by 2027, reinforcing the G7’s commitment to a total of $600 billion aimed at strengthening infrastructure in developing countries.
Lara Poloni, the president of Aecom, expressed pride in their ongoing partnership with USAID, highlighting their role in driving transformative economic development. According to Poloni, Aecom’s expertise in infrastructure development and technical assistance makes them a preferred partner for initiatives like this. She stated, “We are proud to expand our decades-long partnership with USAID to drive transformative economic development and regional connectivity by creating infrastructure solutions that meet international standards, address climate imperatives, and promote good governance.” Her comments underscore Aecom’s commitment to building Sustainable Legacies, with a focus on enhancing clean energy supply chains and improving food security worldwide.
Aecom’s collaboration with USAID marks a significant step toward achieving sustainable infrastructure development goals globally.
