AE Expeditions has officially announced the addition of a new ship, named Douglas Mawson, to its fleet, set to debut at the end of 2025. This expansion signifies AE Expeditions’ strategic growth within the expedition cruise sector and highlights its commitment to offering enhanced travel experiences.
Scheduled for its inaugural season, the ship will mark AE Expeditions’ return to East Antarctica after a notable 15-year absence. These new itineraries will offer travellers a distinctive experience, particularly the ‘Mawson’s Antarctica’ voyage, which will embark from Hobart and pay homage to the vessel’s namesake.
The Douglas Mawson is designed to carry approximately 154 passengers. As the latest vessel to be introduced from the Infinity class, it joins its existing counterparts, Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle, thereby expanding the line’s capacity and options for expedition cruising.
Noteworthy features of the ship include a specially crafted bow, aimed at providing smoother ocean crossings. Inside, the Nordic-inspired design elements offer a range of comfortable staterooms and suites, spread across eleven categories, most boasting private balconies. Recognising the evolving needs of modern travellers, the ship will, for the first time, include several single berth cabins, catering to the solo traveller market.
Public spaces onboard are thoughtfully designed to enhance the passenger experience, with amenities including two restaurants, two bars, a heated outdoor pool, jacuzzis, a gym and sauna, spaces for relaxation and wellness, a library lounge, a citizen science centre, a lecture theatre, and observation decks. These features aim to enrich the journey and provide a comprehensive and immersive experience aboard.
In alignment with the company’s growth strategy, AE Expeditions has appointed Andrew Turner, the former head of commercial and business development for HF Holidays, to the role of sales director for the EMEA region. This move is designed to bolster their presence and facilitate an effective market expansion.
The introduction of Douglas Mawson marks a significant milestone in AE Expeditions’ growth and strategic direction.
