Altrad and Kaefer, specialists in their respective fields, have been appointed to a notable £180m framework at Sellafield. This development signifies a considerable endeavour for the companies, both of which will play integral roles in major projects at the nuclear decommissioning site. The companies are tasked with delivering access solutions, insulation, and painting services, underscoring their expertise and capacity to contribute substantially to the ongoing projects.
The PPP, responsible for this strategic appointment, has placed its trust in Altrad and Kaefer by allocating £90m to each company over a 15-year period. This long-term investment exemplifies the commitment to maintaining robust partnerships and ensuring project continuity over the coming years.
Employing Project 13 principles, the PPP has set out to redefine procurement processes by fostering a more collaborative approach. By moving away from traditional transactional models, the PPP aims to create an environment that encourages innovation and efficiency. This shift is intended to enhance the delivery of services and support the overarching goals of the Sellafield site.
PPP’s Head of Supply Chain, John Rossiter, highlighted the transformative nature of the initiative, stating that PPP is creating an enterprise grounded in commercially aligned and incentivised contracts. This approach is designed to provide certainty of work and encourage investment, particularly from small and medium-sized enterprises, at the earliest stages of project delivery.
From Altrad’s perspective, the framework is a continuation of a longstanding relationship with Sellafield Ltd. Paul Raper, Altrad’s Nuclear Decommissioning Director, emphasised the potential benefits for the local community, noting that the projects will not only deliver sustainable outcomes but also support local employment and social value initiatives in West Cumbria. Similarly, Nick Walters, Director for Nuclear and Defence at Kaefer UK & Ireland, expressed optimism that the framework will secure existing jobs and foster new employment opportunities at the company.
PPP’s structure is underpinned by the collaboration of Sellafield Ltd with four key partners: KBR acting as the lead integration partner, Jacobs as the design and engineering partner, Morgan Sindall overseeing civils construction management, and Altrad Babcock responsible for process construction management. This multifaceted partnership illustrates the comprehensive approach taken to manage and execute the extensive work planned at Sellafield over the next century.
The Sellafield framework underlines the strategic collaboration essential to advancing nuclear decommissioning projects.
