The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has recently adjusted its corporate governance framework, expanding electoral participation rights to individuals operating managed branch offices. This amendment, approved during an extraordinary general meeting on May 23, shifts longstanding practices by enabling those in managed branch agreements, termed ‘Ancillary Office Members’, to stand for election to Abta’s various positions.
Previously restricted to members operating under Abta’s traditional corporate framework, electoral eligibility now includes those conducting business through managed branch agreements. This policy alteration allows a broader range of individuals to contribute to Abta’s strategic direction, acknowledging the significant role they play within the travel industry.
The board of Abta, along with its Council of Regions, has welcomed this amendment as a progressive enhancement of representative capabilities within the association. Abta’s head of membership, Danny Waine, expressed satisfaction with the change, highlighting the opportunity for managed branch members to actively participate in committee and council elections.
Danny Waine further elucidated that the model of managed branches represents an increasing trend within the industry, previously limiting their involvement in Abta’s decision-making processes. By democratizing access to electoral candidacy, Abta aims to harness untapped potential and expertise from these branches, fostering a more integrated approach to its business operations.
Data from the end of June 2023 indicated Abta had 831 members and 416 managed branches, a reflection of the industry’s consolidation over recent years. This strategic amendment is seen as vital in ensuring that the association remains representative of its evolving membership composition and the broader travel sector dynamics.
The expansion of electoral rights to managed branch members illustrates Abta’s commitment to inclusivity and strategic evolution.
