Abbey Logistics Group has recently expanded its reach through the acquisition of two key players in the logistics sector: Gussion Transport UK and Widnes Tank Container Services. This strategic move aligns with the group’s broader ambition to cement its presence across essential logistics hubs within the United Kingdom. The acquisitions encompass facilities located on Ditton Road, Widnes, a site neighbouring the Mersey Multimodal Gateway, thereby strategically enhancing Abbey’s operational footprint alongside its primary base in Liverpool.
This purchase is of notable significance as it represents Abbey’s first acquisition effort since its integration into the Sitra Group back in October 2023. The move is part of a strategic effort to consolidate the logistics markets in both the UK and Europe, focusing on growth through further acquisitions as well as natural development. This recent addition provides Abbey with increased resources, including additional office space, a wash bay, and workshop facilities, all of which will serve to support its expanding team and customer base.
In reaction to the acquisition, David Patten, CEO of Abbey Logistics Group, expressed enthusiasm about this development phase, highlighting the acquisition as pivotal to Abbey’s growth journey. “This is an exciting time for Abbey Logistics Group, and we welcome the customers and employees of the two businesses to our wider group,” Patten stated. The new Widnes facility is poised to play a crucial role in fulfilling Abbey’s long-term strategic ambitions by capitalising on its advantageous geographical position.
Gussion Transport UK, alongside Widnes Tank Container Services, equally expressed optimism regarding the partnership, characterising it as a natural alignment due to both parties’ shared dedication to exemplary service standards and a customer-centric approach. The addition of the Gussion facility, with its excellent motorway access, is seen as a complementary boost to operations across Liverpool and the broader North West region.
Michaela Foster, Director at Gussion Transport, remarked on the new chapter for the business, finding common values with Abbey in customer service and operational excellence. According to Foster, Gussion and Widnes Tank Container Services look forward to benefitting from being part of a larger family while still maintaining their distinct operational identity.
Abbey Logistics Group’s acquisition of Gussion Transport UK and Widnes Tank Container Services marks a significant step in its strategic growth and market consolidation plan.
