Panelled within the innovative environment of MediaCity, an extraordinary opportunity awaits — a virtual expedition to the red planet, facilitated by advanced technological installations. Visitors will engage with these groundbreaking showcases later this month as part of a unique conference.
The University of Salford’s MediaCity campus is at the forefront of this initiative, hosting two pivotal events aligned with the globally recognised BEYOND Conference. This conference is dedicated to exploring the intersections of creative research and transformative business practices.
One of the exhibits, ‘Red Field,’ invites attendees into a stylised Martian setting crafted by the collaborative efforts of award-winning artist Nye Thompson and creative technologist Kriss Dunk. It presents an imaginative take on Mars, utilising NASA’s initial planetary scans. This installation provokes thought about the concept of digital footprints on Mars and explores themes of neocolonialism and exopolitics.
Another remarkable demonstration is ‘Quantum,’ a 20-minute performance that synthesises sound, light, and holographic visuals. Produced by Richard Evans and Cold Star Media, it delves into future scenarios involving artificial intelligence and synthetic life. Through dynamic animations and live electronic music, the show presents these futuristic concepts in an immersive format.
Both projects are nurtured by the Cultural Accelerator programme, a creative scheme orchestrated by the arts organisation FutureEverything. This initiative, commissioned by MediaCity Immersive Technologies Innovation Hub (MITIH) and the University of Salford, showcases the belief that artistic ingenuity can drive technological advancements and stimulate new business territories.
Roger McKinley of the University of Salford and MITIH emphasised the importance of these exhibitions as conduits for exploring innovative business growth through sustainable and experimental methods. His statement encapsulates a compelling vision of integrating art and technology.
The BEYOND Conference stands as an annual convergence point for innovators spanning the current and future spectrums of the Creative Industries. This event remains a cornerstone for intellectual exchange and development within the sphere of research and development.
The immersive events at MediaCity exemplify the powerful synergy between art and technological innovation, expanding creative horizons.
